it is right near the border with mexico so there are a lot of hispanic people and businesses and a lot of things are in spanish. the beach itself is pretty nice and it is a short drive from coronado island. Other than that it is not really the greatest area to walk around at night.

Imperial Beach is well known for being the site of the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. This beach is 20 miles south of San Diego. This beach is less crowded than other beaches and includes a park with picnic, volleyball, and basketball facilities.

I don’t know anything really about the town itself. I’m sure some locals can respond with more details.

Well I use to live in that area and unlike what the first guy said the city is really diverse. You have your Whites, Blacks, Mexicans, and even some Asians. It is a small community and depending where you live at in I.B. most people have lived in there houses for a long time. If you dont want to go to Imperial Beach, you can always hop on the Silver Strand that will lead you to Coronado Island. I didnt mind living there when I did and you can walk around in the night time.

I hate having to go there. I had a friend who lived there and sometimes it smells funny. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s the closest beach to the border or what. Well, it’s inexpensive compared to the other beaches but you have all the young 18-20 somthing years olds who think their tuff guys there. It gets rediculously packed during the “sandcastles”event so hopefully you have a place with your own parking. Not to mention that that’s a big party event so a lot of the younger people that live there during that event throw non stop parties for that weekend (lots of drinking).Traffic that way (south) in the evening sucks. In the morning everyone commutes north and in the evening they drive back south. I’ve heard of it flooding during rain season as well. My friend had an oldie type truck and it got ruined during that time.

Its sort of an all-American type of place, very slow and small townish compared to other beach communities, quite flat, so good for biking, not enough street trees because there were few sidewalks when it was built, so it seems hotter. More diverse than most of South Bay (i.e. more White people). The beach and the pier are good. Most San Diegan’s never go there, except for the sandcastle contest, so its a bit of its own world. Businesses are dominated by small car repair shops, donut shops, local taverns, mostly with a 1950s vibe. Good thrift stores. The housing is mostly 1940s and 1950s plain 2 bedroom places, or condos where these have been torn down for. Very hick town government, corrupt as are most places in the county. Some uptick in local interest due to the HBO series “John from Cincinnati” being filmed there. Its hard to go into town without running into the crew.
